Israeli Innovation on Environmental Chicken Coop

Chicken CoopIn the past, we reported on manure powered dairy farms. Now, in Israel, they’re developing a chicken waste powered coop with wind turbines and solar sells. Being touted as the “Coop of the Future,” the Agrotop coop also has special egg collection chutes designed to enable birds to more easily lay eggs – and nearly double the space currently used to house them.

This not only makes the whole operation environmental. It makes it more humane, an issue Naturalbuy is very concerned with.

Under new regulations by the EU set to go into effect in 2012, egg producers will be required to provide 750 square centimeters of space for each bird. Also required will be sand or grass, imitating the birds’ natural habitat, and even soft material for birds to rest on.

To top it off with a cherry, the coop itself is largely built of recycled materials.

Though the coop is more expensive than traditional ones, the money-saving advantages make it more economical in the long run. Those are, running the coup, refrigerating the eggs, and cleaning up the waste. Since this one uses the waste to power the coop with enough power to refrigerate the eggs, that’s three birds with one stone. But we won’t kill any of them that are in the coop.

Green Energy - Which to Choose?

The idea and the need for alternative green energy is now recognized by everybody.

Everyone is aware that oil based power pollutes and nobody in their right mind wants this, so the next point is what alternatives do we have?
Our green power choices are based on wind, water and light (wind farms, hydroelectricity and solar energy).

Energy that is green and is generated through non-fossil means does not harm or damage the environment and at the same time is not depleted and is therefore either renewable or can be regenerated and reused.

  1. Energy from Wind:  People tend to ignore the more general uses of wind power but at one time it was the main source of energy.  Think of all the sailing ships that navigated the seas and oceans up until the first steam propelled ships. This was just about the only alternative (the exception would be by rowing) for centuries.  Wind farms have now been set up in many countries as a clean and practical alternative to fossil fuel.  These wind farms are limited by location as not only must they have a good source of wind which is consistent all year round, but they are also built in large tracts of land so as to be commercially viable.Home owners can also use wind power as there are small generators that have been developed for residential use.
  2. Hydroelectric Energy:  Hydroelectric plants are located in many countries around the world as it is a very effective way of producing electricity. Basically it uses the natural forces of rivers and the seas and as such it is a very efficient option.Hydroelectric plants must have suitable locations and these are limited.  Those that are available usually are located near farmland or in more isolated areas where the impact in the water basin can be very high. Unfortunately a negative impact in the local environment can take place.
  3. Solar Energy: Another renewable option is to generate energy from sunlight.  There are two main types of solar power.  On is to generate heat and a great example of this is solar panels used to heat swimming pools.  An the other is solar panels made to generate electricity.  Electricity generation is what most people think of when speaking of solar power.  To generate electricity, photovoltaic solar panels are used to capture the sunlight.  Special battery storage systems are used to harness the electricity that is generated while the solar panels receive direct sunlight.  Solar energy seems to be at an interesting growth stage both from the point of view of use (individual and commercial) and because of the research and investment that is taking place.

All three alternatives represent advances in energy production but solar energy appears to be the best option because sunlight is available much of the time in all countries and at the same time it is even less polluting than the other natural renewable resources.

Cloudy days or days with less hours of sunlight are no longer a major limitation to the new range of solar panels that have been developed. Modern solar panels require little maintenance and each new development seems to bring new smaller panels.
We need energy and an energy supply for just about everything in our society today.
And we must receive energy that is green and therefore non-polluting.  Solar energy is perhaps the greenest of our current options.

Energy Sources - Renewable or Sustainable

Energy sources are a major fact of life. Renewable energy sources - solar power, water power, wind power and atomic power - are becoming if not fashionable, certainly a major point of consideration.

In fact in the next few years investment and development will grow considerably.

Having said that there is still an ongoing debate between renewable sources of energy and sustainable energy.

And quite frankly the underlying reasons for this debate is monetary considerations.

In simple terms sustainable energy refers to extending the life of the currently available sources so they last longer.

Renewable sources are those which can be replenished.

Arguments for and against can go on and on - and you can add many arguments, technical, scientific, social, environmental and so on.

Eventually what you get is an ongoing argument with many “experts” contradicting themselves and you end up spinning your wheels.

Since I am not an “expert” in anything - thankfully as everybody is an expert now days with not very impressive results - I try to keep things simple.

In the first place, sustainable or extending and stretching the available resources has to have an ending some time.

You can argue about when this will happen or how long these sources will last, but the end result is “finito”.

Environmental impact is definitely an argument, the problem though is that there are so many positions for or against that do manipulate the information.

So my simple approach is that there is a negative impact.

The monetary considerations are real.

The investment that has been made in non-renewable sources of energy is enormous as are the economic and power related interests vested in these industries.

(Eventually this will also become a part of the renewable energy sources).

So what is the next step?

From my simple point of view:

  • Continued investment in research and implementation of alternative sources. (At this moment in time I am very much for Mr. Obama’s stated economic plan).
  • Natural and green living.

Imagine Solar Energy At Your Finger Tips

Solar energy, classified as renewable energy, can be harnessed without major technical difficulties.

This source of energy, coming from our sun, can be used by anyone, it can be harnessed and transformed into electricity, it won’t run out and it is free.

For years now the need for alternative energy has been a major force in technological developments, and solar energy is one of the major players that will become available in many different forms.

Many people now recognize that there will be great changes affecting our society as well as future generations because we are able to convert solar energy.

Just sit back a little and put your imagining cap on.

  • Imagine the silence surrounding vehicles that run on solar energy.
  • Imagine all countries being equal in terms of energy supply.
  • Imagine no oil related international blackmail.
  • Imagine what will happen to those oil wells, to those gigantic oil tankers.
  • Imagine no home energy bills as you have your own solar panels.
  • Imagine the range of new enterprises being set up.
  • Imagine the increased new jobs and new job descriptions
  • Imagine no car or vehicle pollution.
  • Imagine explaining to a child, how it was like before…
  • Imagine living in a clean environment.

For sometime now we have been converting the sun’s rays into energy, but a new generation of solar power is coming along, and the origin of it all is the gift of light we receive from the sun.
